Introduction to Dzogchen through Preliminary practices
Dzogchen is regarded as the most powerful teaching in Tibetan spiritual culture. It has high potential to liberate the mind from the narrowness and negative patterns which are the main causes of suffering. However, to approach this teaching properly, we first have to build a foundation. For this purpose, the so-called preliminary practices, Ngöndro, were designed. They settle and clear the mind and open it for main Dzogchen practice.
"I started to do Ngöndro just after the retreat ended and I’ve almost completed it. To my surprise, it turned out to be one of the most effective and powerful practices I’ve ever done in thirty years as a practitioner." (A participant of the retreat in 2019)
During the retreat, Geshe Samten Tsukphud will describe all the preliminary practices and explain how to understand them essentially, not just formally. He will disclose the deep functions and meaning of Ngöndro and focus on each of the practices specifically. He will speak about Bodhicitta and the right motivation for spiritual development, about the importance of understanding impermanence, and about the practice of guru yoga, which is considered the key practice, even for those who already do Dzogchen meditation.
This time, Ngöndro will be taught according to the A-Khrid system of instructions.
The retreat is very suitable for all those who would like to be introduced to Dzogchen, which is the main teaching given at Shenten Dargye Ling. It is also highly recommended to all those who already know the preliminary practices but have not yet experienced much positive change in their mindset.
This retreat at Shenten is scheduled immediately after the highlight of the spring season, the retreat on the Twenty-one Little Nails. We hope this arrangement will enable those who travel a long distance to attend both the retreats.
