Geshe Kalsang Gyatso was born in 1972 in Horpan village in Amdo Ngawa, eastern Tibet. He received primary education in his home area until the age of fourteen when he entered Nangzhig monastery in 1976. He received his monk vows from Gyaltsab Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche and he studied philosophy with Geshe Yeshe and language with his uncle Tsering Trashi.

In 1990 he arrived in India where he continued his studies at the famous Menri Monastery. He received vows and initiations from Menri Trizin Lungtog Tenpai Nyima Rinpoche and studied under the guidance of Menri Ponlob Trinlas Nyima for five years. In 1995 he moved to Triten Norbutse monastery in Kathmandu where he studied Dzogchen and Tantra under the guidance of the Bon tradition most revered teacher Yongdzin Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche and teachings on sutra from Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung Rinpoche. In 2000 he had the fortune to receive all the initiations of outer, inner and secret tantra from Yongdzin Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche.

In 2003 Kalsang Gyatso finished his studies and was awarded the Geshe degree. Upon his graduation Yongdzin Lopon Tendzin Namdhak and Khenpo Tenpa Yungdrung requested him to stay at Triten Norbutse as one of its main teachers. Since then he has been teaching sutra, tantra and Dzogchen

In 2011 Yongdzin Lopon Tendzin Namdhak gave him the title of teacher who holds the root (and explanatory) texts (rtsa-zhung ‘dzin-pai lob-pon).
